Background: Even as young child Melina displayed a temper which fierceness was unusual even for the predatory Fresnian: when there was a commotion on the playground, it was sure money that Melina was in the middle of it. During school, Melina learned some discipline, but still didn't take shit from nobody. It was no surprise that after graduation she signed up with Starfleet, however it raised some eyebrows that she chose Security over the Marine Corps. But as she explained: "I'm not good at taking orders." At the Academy she met fellow Fresnian Isthan DelBraye, who fascinated her because in his quiet, slightly sarcastic way he proved to be more than a match for her temper. After two years she become pregnant with their child, and both took a leave of absence. Later Isthan resigned from the Academy (and Starfleet) altogether, so when she returned to duty, he took over the main responsibility for their child. Melina left Academy with an shining academic record, and a slightly tarnished disciplinary record. Her saving grace at that point was that she had stood up for others as often as for herself. She was assigned to the USS ARIEL, a Charon-class Frigate patrolling the Romulan border, with the clear understanding that she was on probation. During this time she also made the acquaintance of now MSGT Qu'ra, Daughter of Monakh; and Qu'ra still holds a grudge over the encounter. Two years later she was promoted to LTjg with flying colors, after her aggressive approach to negotiations often proved to be enough to dispersuade a wannabe raider from crossing the border. Especially among the Klingons she had gained some notoriety and grudging respect. Yet, her promotion was not without some doubts as Melina still had the tendency to act without authorization from her superiors. Her promotion was followed by a BUPERS SNAFU, which left her assigned to the USS FOKKER, a Thunderbolt-class destroyer escort assigned to SB ALPHA. The FOKKER's missions consisted mostly of escort duty, and flying her Marine complement to local hot spots, which left Melina not much to do security wise. To make the best from her situation, Melina attached herself to the FOKKER's Marine complement, acting as an inofficial liaison between the Marines and the Security staff and effectively combining the two units into one smooth functioning machine (not without bruising a couple of egos). Her work, while unspectacular in detail, was eventually noticed when the FOKKER managed to complete more and more difficult missions without asking for backup. She was promoted to full Lieutenant and destined as official Marine Liaison for the USS HORUS which at that time suffered from a deep rift between the Navy and the Marine staff. Melina accepted under the condition that she would be allowed to undergo Marine Basic Training before she reported for her post. Despite the time pressure, Starfleet Command agreed - not only because the training would give Melina more credibility, but also because the training would give her better control over herself. On the HORUS, the situation had meanwhile escalated into almost open warfare, incapacating the HORUS as combat unit. For the next two years, Melina was probably the most hated person on the ship, but inevitably both sides found out that it was easier to work with her than against her. Additionally her competence in both Fleet and Marine procedures allowed her to make constructive suggestions for improvements in how the departments worked together. In the end, the HORUS regained her efficiency with a crew turnover of only 11% - much less than the 95% Starfleet Command had expected. It seemed logical that Melina would next take her Senior Bridge Officers exam, but ironically the same qualities who helped her reactivating the HORUS now worked against her: by losing her temper during a simulated stand-off against a superior alien, she caused a subordinate officer to panic and fire at the alien ship, provoking a deadly retaliation. After failing the exam, Melina continued to serve on the HORUS as head of security, but subordinate to the TAC/SEC. In this position she slowly acquired the people skills required for a successfull commander; a point proven after two years when a First Contact mission went downhill and incapacitated the TAC/SEC. Melina was nominated acting TAC/SEC and resolved the crisis without any fatalities. On request of the Captain of the HORUS, Starfleet gave Melina a second chance at the Senior Bridge Officers test, but required that she attended Command School first. The additional instruction paid off, and Melina passed her exam with honours. More difficult was it afterwards to find her a new assignment - many COs refused to have somebody they perceived as "loose cannon" on their staff. Finally she was assigned as SEC to the USS KIEV. The KIEV was exploring the yet uncharted space beyond the UFP space, a assignment which gave Melina's department constant work to do - be it protecting away teams from hostile races, or protecting the dignitaries of friendly ones. During this time Melina proved herself to be a competent and dedicated officer, well-respected by superiors and subordinates alike, and not afraid to take personal responsibility in defusing hairy situations. After about two years the KIEV was recalled for refits and the crew was assigned to other ships. Melina was assigned as XO to the USS KUSANAGI, then part of the Krima Exploration Task Force in Gold fleet. Right on her first mission she could prove her worth when the KUSANAGI unexpectantly encountered a hostile force superior in numbers and firepower. At the same time Starfleet was experiencing a shortage in commanding officers, so when the KUSANAGI returned from her mission, Melina was promoted to CDR and CO and of the KUSANAGI. During all her career Melina has kept in close contact with her husband and child, spending as much time with them as possible. OFFICIAL STAR FLEET RECORD 2397: Accepted to Starfleet Academy 2399: Leave of absence 2402: Commissioned as Ensign, assigned to USS ARIEL 2403: Promotion to LTjg, assigned to USS FOKKER 2406: Marine Basic Training 2406: Promotion to LT, assigned to USS HORUS as Marine Liaison 2409: Failed Senior Bridge Officer qualification 2409: Served on USS HORUS: Junior SEC Officer 2411: Served on USS HORUS: acting TAC/SEC 2412: Command School 2412: Promotion to LCDR, assigned to USS KIEV as XO 2414: Assigned to USS KUSANAGI as XO 2415: Promotion to CDR, assigned to USS KUSANAGI as CO SKILLS PROFILE Melina's aggressive temper makes her well-suited for situations asking for the display (or use) of force as means of negotiations. Apart from the usual skills of a Senior SEC Bridge Officer, Melina has received training in Marine Rifleman Counter-Intelligence Vulcan Meditation Techniques Melina is proud of her Marine training and makes an effort to re-qualify every year. RECENT FITNESS REPORT "LCDR DelBraye works out regularily and is in good shape for a commanding officer. She should put more emphasis on her martial arts training, though." (LT James Thoburn, Physical Instructor, 2414) "LCDR DelBraye is in excellent health, especially considering her sensitivity to the environmental conditions on starships. For the latter reason it is important that LCDR DelBraye does not skip her semi-annual physicals." (Dr. Morton Wright, CMO, USS KIEV, 2414) RECENT PSYCHOLOGIAL REPORT "LCDR DelBraye has finally acquired the balance between her aggressive emotions and the carefulness of reason required from a commanding officer. Her natural temper will allow her to act at moments notice, but she can also keep herself in check when a more diplomatic approach is required. However, her naturelle makes her more suited for the more hazardous duty at the frontlines of the Federation. Future COs should be aware that LCDR DelBraye has the habit of voicing her opinion frankly, a habit that can easily be misunderstood as insubordination." Their sense of vision, smell and hearing are sharper than humans, in turn the levels of light and sound normal on board of starships are close to the upper limit of what Fresnians consider comfortable. Having evolved from a predator species, the diet of Fresnians is mainly based on meat (well, protein), and they are able to change their complexion from pale up to a dark tan (a simple camouflage mechanism). The canines of a Fresnian could make Count Dracula jealous; however, blood is not a staple of Fresnian diet (insuffiently nutritious, and it tastes like rusty iron). Modern Fresnians no longer hunt for survival, especially not sentient prey, but as a sport it is still an essential part of their lifes. Consequently the ability to control the 'inner beast' without suppressing it is considered a distinct mark civilization. Fresnian society is in its details as many-faceted as for example the human society; in general however Fresnians tend to organize themselves akin to packs: loyal to its members, but not committed exclusively to them. The Intergalactic Puzzle Association is a formally-informal network of beings interested in the intellectual challenges of all kinds of puzzles, mathematical and otherwise. Most commonly members challenge just each other, or tackle problems gathered from current events; but occasionally third parties approach the IGA members for some paid work (usually the IGA members base their acceptance on the difficulty of the problem). All members of the IGA use pseudonyms; membership is de-facto by participation and succeeding in public challenges. Melina has permission to wear dark glasses and ear plugs on duty, but usually skips the ear plugs. Melina has a fiery temper (somewhat mellowed by age and training), but doesn't hold a grudge long. As the situation demands, she can easily change her behaviour between being "Smilin' Mel" and "Icy Commander". vim:textwidth=70
