She soon developed an liking for heights (trees, mountains), and often dreamed about being able to fly. With her maturity, she had to decide between pursuing a civilian flight career and joining Starfleet; and since her Academic Test scores were promising, she decided for Starfleet because of the additional academic education. As a cadet, Nightear flourished. She discovered an intuition for the complex field of Xenobiology and made it her academic major; at the same time she made a name for herself in the Academy's skimmer racing team. After graduating from Starfleet, Nightear first received additional training as pilot of small combat craft, and was then assigned to the fighter wing of the USS CECROPS. Being the rookie in a group of veterans, Nightear had to work hard for acceptance; although her supreme flying skills worked in her favor. The turning point came 2405 in the Battle of Velaron III, where the Federation was acting as mediator and providing assistance after a fierce civil war. A marauding group of fighter craft, formerly under command of one of the warring factions, attacked the hospital ship USS AL-RAZI in orbit. Nightear and two other pilots were flying patrol, and although outnumbered and outgunned they managed to hold back the attack long enough for the USS CECROPS to catch up and join the battle. During the fight, Nightear's craft was destroyed, she herself barely escaped alive. For her actions and the injuries suffered, Nightear was honoured with the Purple Heart and promoted; however, one of her injures affected her spatial orientation. The prognosis for a complete recovery are good, but it could take years. Nightear was therefore taken off active flight duty and assigned the position of Flight Deck Director. Responsible for the orderly movement of all craft, she devised a number of intricate drills and training sessions for pilots and flight deck personell alike. As a result the average efficiency of the CECROPS' flight operations soon rated ten percent better than what regulations required. In 2406, the USS CECROPS was recalled from duty for a scheduled upgrade, and the crew was transferred to other ships. In recognition of Nightear's skills in training crew members, and in view of a acute shortage of instructors, Nightear was offered a position as instructor on Armstrong Lunar Base. She accepted, but not without ulterior motive: the holodecks on ALB are sophisticated enough to render a convincing simulation of space flight - convincing enough to make the loss of real space flight easier to bear. After a year of instructing, Nightear grew restless with the planetbound life and requested a transfer to a shipbound position. Her request was granted with a posting on the USS TAIFUN, a fast long-range explorer. Nominally subordinate to the vessel's NAV, the small size of the ship demanded a 50-50 share of the duties, which meant that Nightear got to fly again - even if it was 'just' a starship and not a fighter craft. The USS TAIFUN departed for an 18 month exploration mission to extend the boundaries of known Federation space - a mission which brought the vessel into lethal danger more than once. After completion, Nightear was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, as were several other crewmembers. It was then that Nightear realised that her sense for spatial orientation was returning too slowly for her to pick up fighter craft duty again; so she decided to pursue the command track. After attending Command School and being promoted to LCDR, she returned to the USS TAIFUN as NAV. In 2409 she was offered the position as the XO on the USS AZOV, combined with a promotion to CDR, and she accepted. The USS AZOV was the latest ship of the Kirov-class heavy cruisers, again meant for fast long-range exploration. However, during the first few months of service the USS AZOV was cursed with many defects and accidents, so that the crew started using the nickname 'K-19' for the ship. It is a proof to Nightear's skill in handling people that not only crew-turnover was just nominal even during the first months, but also among the crewmembers it is now considered to be a mark of honor to be a veteran 'K-19er'. During the next three years - Nightear was promoted to Captain of the ship in 2410 - the USS AZOV flew primarily fire-fighting missions, and quickly became notorious for the fierce tenacity with which the Captain and her crew saw to fulfilling their orders. In 2414, just when Nightear turned 32, the USS AZOV was recalled for maintenance, and in a repetition of events Nightear was again offered a position on ALB - but this time as Adjutant to the Commander. OFFICIAL STAR FLEET RECORD 2403: Graduation from SF Academy 2405: Promoted to LTjg, USS CECROPS. 2406: Assigned as Instructor, ALB 2407: Promoted to LT, USS TAIFUN 2408: Promoted to LCDR, USS TAIFUN 2409: Promoted to CDR, USS AZOV 2410: Promoted to CAPT, USS AZOV 2414: Promoted to CDOR, ALBADJ SKILLS PROFILE Nightear's skills show both her upbringing and her flight duty experience: Fighter Pilot Basic Shuttle Maintenance Combat Shuttle Maintenance Flight Deck Protocols Small Unit Leadership Unarmed Combat (claws and fangs) Wilderness Survival Mountaineering Nightear exhibits the typical traits of a fighter jock: aggressive, with a strong ego; off duty often mischievious and undisciplined, on duty calm and committed. Good, warm singing voice. RECENT FITNESS REPORT: Overall: 95% "Except for her sense of spatial orientation, Nightear is in excellent shape. She should watch her protein-intake, though." (CDR Norya Soong, MD, 2413) RECENT PSYCHOLOGIAL REPORT "Over the last years, Nightear has performed admirably under very difficult circumstances; however there is a danger that she might burn out if her duties continue to be that dangerous. A temporary position with calmer duty is advised." (LCDR Mark Brandis, CNS, 2414) RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES Skimmer racing Singing Climbing ADDITIONAL INFORMATION vim:textwidth=70
